For me, painting a portrait, landscape or still life is much like a journey through equally beautiful and challenging stages. With portraits, the appearance of the sitter changes from one moment to the next as I push the oil around the canvas working with light and colour. I like to engage with the sitter - their eyes always attract me to their energy and personality.
In all my work, I use a bold colour palette rather than a traditional palette and enjoy pushing the vibrancy I see in front of me - be it my sitter’s personality or the colour of nature. My mark making is inspired by the works of twentieth century post impressionism particularly Paul Gaugin and more modern day artists such as Lucian Freud, Helen Schjerfbeck and Andrew Pearce.
