Shirley Smith

Much of my work in ceramics celebrates the ocean within hand-built functional vessels combined with sculpted marine-life. Inspired by a passion for scuba-diving, my pieces range from platters with starfish,
turtles or crabs to larger functional pots incorporating complex crustacean sculptures. I also enjoy producing realistic primate and other wildlife sculptures including wall-hangings.
I attach great importance to vessel forms and the flow of the sculptures. Uncertainty however is implicit in ceramics. Will the opened kiln reveal success, failure or confusion.
